'Merica, am I right?
I cannot believe it is July already. When did that happen?
With only two days left until Independence Day, I'm running out of time to share the wreath that's been hanging on our front door for quite a while.
If I were a good blogger, this would have been up a month ago, leaving plenty of time to inspire knock-offs and get thoroughly circulated on Pinterest. Not only am I not timely, I'm not blown over by the way this one turned out.
I love the tiny pennant, made by cutting up a tiny cheapo flag, even though I'm pretty sure destroying the flag is a federal crime. I like the idea of all the bunches of red, white, and blue flowers, but it lacks the charm of the pantry wreath.
Something just feels off. Maybe it's that it doesn't read as well from the street. Maybe it's that there's no other Americana outside our house. Maybe the whole thing could be perfect if I had decorated the topiaries.
Oh well. Too little, too late now.
Anyone have ideas as to what I did wrong?
should have done the "bushes?" next to the door as well
ReplyDeleteProbably... (I call them topiaries, officially they're fake "cedar spirals"). I'm also thinking a patriotic doormat would have helped.
DeleteThe blue blends in too well with the green, so it looks like a lot of red and white Christmas ornaments from the street. Instead of lots of small pieces of red, white and blue, go bigger and bolder with fewer pieces. Maybe wrap the R with a wide striped (or star spangled) ribbon, or try a single large bow with the same ribbon.
ReplyDeleteUp to this point, I've actually *only* done large bows, ribbon wrapped around, or the tail end of a large bow wrapped around the R. I wanted to try something different so it wouldn't start feeling stagnant, but I guess my tried and true method is the best because it just works. That R is more challenging than it looks. I'm already looking forward to my late summer/early fall wreath.
DeleteI didn't notice your pantry wreath until after I saw this post but it turned out beautifully! One large cluster of red, white and blue flowers or stars probably would have looked really nice here too, especially if you want to try something other than bows or ribbon. You might also consider just tucking an American flag into the wreath.
DeleteThat's a really good idea. I love how the pantry wreath looks, but had some trouble interpreting it *on* the R instead of just around it. I hadn't considered the flag idea either; something to tool around with next summer :)
